Three-dimensional non-Abelian generalizations of the Hofstadter model: Spin-orbit-coupled butterfly trios

چکیده
We theoretically introduce and study a three-dimensional Hofstadter model with linearly varying non-Abelian gauge potentials along all three dimensions. The can be interpreted as spin-orbit coupling among trio of butterfly pairs since each Cartesian surface ($xy$, $yz$, or $zx$) the reduces to two-dimensional problem. By evaluating commutativity arbitrary loop operators around axes, we derive its genuine (necessary sufficient) condition, namely, at least two out hopping phases should neither 0 nor $\pi$. Under different choices fields in either Abelian regime, both weak strong topological insulating are identified model.

Three-dimensional spin rotations at the Fermi surface of a strongly spin-orbit coupled surface system.
The spin texture of the metallic two-dimensional electron system (sqrt[3]×sqrt[3])-Au/Ge(111) is revealed by fully three-dimensional spin-resolved photoemission, as well as by density functional calculations. The large hexagonal Fermi surface, generated by the Au atoms, shows a significant splitting due to spin-orbit interactions. The planar components of the spin exhibit a helical character, a...
متن کاملSpin-orbit-coupled superconductivity
Superconductivity and spin-orbit (SO) interaction have been two separate emerging fields until very recently that the correlation between them seemed to be observed. However, previous experiments concerning SO coupling are performed far beyond the superconducting state and thus a direct demonstration of how SO coupling affects superconductivity remains elusive. Here we investigate the SO coupli...
متن کاملEffects of screening on the Hofstadter butterfly.
We study, within the Hartree approximation, the effects of the electronelectron interaction on the energy spectrum of a two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular homogeneous magnetic field and a lateral superlattice potential with square symmetry. Due to the strong screening effects, the bandwidth of the Landau bands oscillates strongly with their filling. For short enough periods and str...

We study the dynamical dielectric function of a two-dimensional hole gas, exemplified on [001] GaAs and InAs quantum wells, within the Luttinger model extended to the two lowest subbands including bulk and structure inversion asymmetric terms. The plasmon dispersion shows a pronounced anisotropy for GaAsand InAs-based systems. In GaAs this leads to a suppression of plasmons due to Landau dampin...
